History
As
early as 1843, an enthusiastic interest in maintaining a Catholic School in=
St.
Peter Parish in Covington was exhibited. The old church was used as a school
from 1890 until 1910, when a three-room school was built. This building was=
later
destroyed in the 1915 hurricane, but was immediately rebuilt. In 1923=
, a
two-story frame school was built to accommodate the increasing enrollment. =
By
1950, enrollment reached 223. The main campus of St. Peter School was dedic=
ated
in 1956. We presently accommodate over 700 students.
Today, the campus of St. Peter
Catholic School consists of Administrative Offices (2000), Cafeteria (2000)
Special Education Room, Math and Reading Tutor Room, Speech Room, Computer =
Lab,
Art Room, Music/Band Room and Early Childhood Building (ECC, Pre-k & K
students 1997) Main Building (first through third grades),Intermediate Buil=
ding
(fourth and fifth grades), Middle Grades (2001 sixth through seventh grade),
renovation and enlargement of the library (2002) and the purchase and
development of land for an extra playground by our Parents’ Club (200=
5).
Location
St. Peter Catholic School is
located in downtown Covington, Louisiana on the north shore of Lake
Pontchartrain. It is one block south of Boston Street, in the heart of the
Historic District of Covington. The school is approximately 55 minutes from=
New
Orleans.

Mission
In
fidelity to the apostolate of Catholic education, we, the leadership of St.
Peter School, fully mindful of the primary role of parents, will strive to
create an environment where students will be led to grow physically, mental=
ly,
and spiritually, according to gospel principles, as enshrined in our Cathol=
ic
tradition, thereby glorifying God and giving living witness to
the
presence of Christ in the world.
Philoso=
phy
The
philosophy of St. Peter School community embraces
the
belief that the primary purpose of the school is to supplement and
complement
the efforts of parents to uphold the threefold mission of the Church of
Jesus
Christ: proclaiming the teaching of the word, celebrating the sacred myster=
ies,
and serving the people of the world. The ministry of the word, the ministry=
of
worship and the ministry of service exist to serve these aspects of His
mission.
&=
nbsp;
&=
nbsp; As
catechists we teach that commitment to these ministries by the faithful is =
the
chief building block of our Christian community. We believe that through
instruction and formation the student will assume his or her rightful place=
of
leadership within the world community.
&=
nbsp; We
are sensitive to the spiritual, personal, social and physical needs of our
students and accept the responsibility of their development in an atmospher=
e of
love and understanding. We espouse the belief that the ultimate aim of
discipline is self-discipline.
&=
nbsp; We
support the concept of a sequential, goal-oriented curriculum, one that is =
structured
to form a good academic foundation and one that will culminate in a genuine
love for learning.
&=
nbsp; We
nurture in our students an awareness of devotion to our country and its
democratic heritage and to the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a
free society.
&=
nbsp; In
a spirit of faith, hope and love, by word and example, we seek
to instill in our students an aware=
ness
of their sacred obligation to
God to serve =
their
brothers and sisters according to the Gospel values
of Jesus Chri=
st.
Faculty and Staff
St. Peter Catholic School presently
has a staff of over 40 individuals who are completely dedicated to our miss=
ion
in Catholic education. Their objective is to help our students grow physica=
lly,
mentally and spiritually according to the principles of the Holy Gospel. We
have 28 homeroom teachers and 16 teaching assistants, as well as 2 full-time
physical education teachers, 2 full-time religion teachers and instructors =
for
both art and music. We also employ a school counselor, a librarian and a
technology teacher. We are very proud to offer an honors program in English=
and
math for the 6th and 7th grade, as well as offering speech therapy and spec=
ial
education to those in need. In
2009, we received accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools, demonstrating our commitment to a proven process of continuous
